FRIDAY'S MATCH-UP
This Friday, January 10, the East Carolina women will travel to Charlotte to open up league play. It will be the first of two scheduled games against the 49ers. Last season the two teams went 1-1, each winning its respective home game. Charlotte and East Carolina have faced each other 22 times previously. The 49ers lead the series 6-16. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start at Halton Arena on the Charlotte campus.

SCOUTING THE PIRATES

After scoring 80 points in the Pirates' last four games, Jennifer Jackson has taken over as the East Carolina scoring leader for the 2002-03 season. She is averaging 15.2 points per game. Jackson is also leading the team in rebounds, with 8.3 boards per outing.

Courtney Willis and Tali Robich are also averaging double-figures in scoring. Willis has an average of 14.6 points per game, and Robich is averaging 10.8.

ECU has competed in three in-season tournaments this year. The Pirates were the champions of the U.S. Cellular Classic at East Carolina, and were runners-up in the UNCG Marriott Classic and the Atlanta NW Marriott Classic.

The Pirates are shooting 42.8 percent from the field this season, and 67.9 percent from the free throw line.

In nine of the Pirates' 12 games this season, three or more players have posted double-figure points. The only three games in which three players didn't hit double-figured scoring were the Duke, North Carolina A&T, and Florida Atlantic games.

In the games against Bethune-Cookman and Alabama, every participating player scored at least two points. Against Bethune- Cookman and North Carolina A&T every participating player had at least one rebound.

SCOUTING THE 49ERS

Charlotte is returning three starters and six letterwinners from last year's 16-13 squad.

The 49ers went 7-7 in Conference USA last season, good enough for a seventh place finish. The 49ers faced Memphis in the first round of the league tournament, winning 58- 46. In the second round of the tournament, Charlotte dropped its game to Houston 68-65.

This year the 49ers are 8-5, and undefeated at home (5-0). The team participated in the preseason-WNIT, but lost its first game to Georgia Tech, 67-57.

Leading the way for Charlotte is freshman Pam Brown, averaging 10.8 points per game. She is the only player to average double figures in scoring for the 49ers. Freshman Leslie Cook is the second leading scorer with an average of 9.2 points per game. Alicia Abernathy leads Charlotte in rebounds with an average of 7.3 boards per outing.

The 49ers are under the direction of second year head coach Katie Meier, who has a 24-18 record at Charlotte.

THE CHARLOTTE SERIES
The January 10 matchup between Charlotte and East Carolina will be the 23rd all-time meeting between the two teams.

Charlotte leads the series 6-16. The two faced each other twice last season, each team winning one game.
