Lady Pirate Soccer Ties Saint Louis 1-1
October 10, 2003 | Soccer
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- On a cool and damp afternoon, the East Carolina women's soccer team took on Saint Louis in a double-overtime tie in conference play at Bunting Field.
The Pirates (6-4-3, 2-1-2) gave up an early goal in the sixth minute of play, when Jamie Perry scored the Billikens (8-2-2, 3-1-1) lone goal on a penalty kick. Perry placed the ball in the upper left corner of the box, just out of reach of the Pirates goalie, Lindsi Troxler.
Thought to be a tough match by many, the Pirates defense held the Billikens in check the remainder of the match allowing 14 shots, six of which were on goal.
ECU had their opportunities early, but was unable to capitalize until the 81st minute of the match when sophomores Carmen Calpo and Meghan McCallion hooked up on the game tying goal. Calpo received a long pass from Megan Schwanke and took it down the right side of the field and found McCallion in the box for a header. It was McCallion's ninth goal of the season.
In the overtime periods, the Pirates had two prime chances to win the match, but came up short as the Billikens goalkeeper Amada Martin would halt the Pirate attack.
"I thought the team battled the whole game today and was rewarded with a goal late," said ECU head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "Saint Louis came out aggressive in the first 15 to 20 minutes. We started to get some momentum going when (Rachel) Hils came into the game. She helped expand the field, allowing us to move some people around and we started to win some balls. We had some really good looks at the goal, but unable to execute the shots. This was a hard fought game and a deserved tie for both teams."
The Pirates will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 12, when they take on conference leader DePaul at 1 p.m. at Bunting Field.
