
UAB Outlasts Volleyball, 3-2

Swenson scored a game-high 25.5 points putting down 19 kills, four aces , one solo block and three block assists. She added 13 digs. Shields added 20.5 points with 17 kills, two aces, three block assists and chipped in 13 digs on defense.
Freshman outside hitter Jaime Bevan led five Pirates in double figures. Bevan scored a team-high 19 points with 16 kills, one ace, one solo block and two block assists. Sophomore Erica Wilson aded 17 points after tallying 13 kills two aces, one solo block and two block assists. Pam Ferris added 16 points chipping in 12 kills, three aces, one solo block for the Pirates and recording 14 digs on defense.
ECU outhit the Lady Blazers .242-.201 and out-dug UAB, 61-58, but the Pirates committed 18 service errors in the match. UAB's front line combined for 12 blocks.
The Pirates took game one, 30-17, as the Lady Blazers hit -.081. ECU used a 16-6 run to pull away from UAB and take an 24-12 lead. Junior Sarah Vick led the team with five kills after game one. UAB jumped out early in game two with a 11-3 run. Shields spark the run with three kills. After UAB took a 17-10 lead, the Pirates used a 7-0 run to tie game two. Ferris added two kills during the run. The Lady Blazers then scored five straight points to regain the lead for good for the 30-23 win.
UAB battled back from five points down to tie game three, 29-29, but Vick and Katie Jannusch sealed the game with kills for ECU. Swenson put down seven kills in game four for the Lady Blazers to help force game five.
In the final game, the Blazers built an 8-4 advantage behind three blocks, but ECU fought back tying the game 11-11. Wilson added a kill and an ace during the run. UAB then scored the final four points of game five to take the match.
Alexis Jones added 12 points after putting down 10 kills, one ace and two blocks. Sarah Vick added 10 kills for the Pirates. Defensively, Johanna Bertini led the team with 15 digs. Junior setter Jessica Vick recorded 51 set assists.
Karen Boyd added 14.5 points for the Lady Blazers putting down 12 kills. Lindsay Carnohan had 10 points for UAB.
ECU returns to action Saturday when the Pirates host USF at 7 p.m. in its second straight C-USA match. UAB heads to Charlotte for a conference match.
