February 10, 2003 | Football
Galloway will serve as the team's wide receivers coach and Kaufman will coach the Pirate defensive line.
A former standout quarterback at Western Carolina, Galloway spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach at Elon, serving as the team's quaterbacks coach this past year. Prior to assuming the quarterback coaching duties, Galloway served as the Phoenix wide receivers coach for three seasons (1999-2001).
Galloway was a four-year letterman at quarterback for Western Carolina from 1990-93, where he holds 10 single game, single season or career passing records. Galloway's 5,545 career passing yards rank him second on the Catamounts' all-time chart. Twice during his career he passed for over 2,000 yards in a single season.
"Lonnie Galloway has a great reputation as a recruiter and a person," said Thompson. "He has tremendous contacts throughout North and South Carolina and is going to be a tremendous asset to us recruiting both states."
Kaufman, a former defensive coordinator at Ole Miss and Louisiana Tech, recently completed his second season as the defensive coordinator at Arkansas Tech and has 20 years of collegiate coaching experience under his belt.
Prior to joining the staff at Arkansas Tech, Kaufman spent seven seasons as the defensive coordinator at Ole Miss after serving in the same capacity at Louisiana Tech for three seasons (1992-94). Before accepting the defensive coordinator position at Louisiana Tech, he served as outside linebackers coach and defensive ends coach at Mississippi for four seasons (1988-91).
He got his first full-time coaching job at Northwestern State (La.) as the outside linebackers coach in 1983, where he served on the same coaching staff as ECU's current head coach. When Thompson left to become defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech following the 1986 season, Kaufman was elevated to defensive coordinator for the 1987 season.
A 1980 graduate of the university of Arkansas at Monticello, Kaufman was a two-time All-American linebacker. He followed his four-year career with the Boll Weevils by becoming a graduate assistant coach at Delta State.
"Art Kaufman brings a great deal of experience to our football program," stated Thompson. "We worked togehter at Northwestern State for three years and I know for a fact that we've got a big time coach."
The two additions bring Thompson's coaching hires to 10, including graduate assistants. The ECU staff includes defensive coordinator Jerry Odom, running backs coach Jerry McManus, offensive line/assistant head coach J.B. Grimes, tight ends coach Steve Janski, defensive backs coach Matt Graves, outside linebackers coach Fred Tate, graduate assistants Larry Shannon and Shep Campbell, and director of football operations Mike Ritchie.
