Lady Pirates Look to Secure Spot in C-USA Tournament
March 02, 2003 | Women's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina University's women's basketball team can secure a spot in the 2003 Conference USA Tournament with a win this afternoon against Southern Miss. The game, which tips off at 2 p.m. at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum, will be the Lady Pirates' home and regular season finale.
ECU enters the game 12-14 overall and 4-9 in C-USA play. The Lady Pirates are currently tied with UAB for the 12th and final spot in the upcoming conference tournament. An ECU win or a loss by UAB to Houston would clinch the Lady Pirates' first-ever trip to the tournament. A win by both ECU and UAB could possibly create up to a five-way tie for eighth place in the league and would lead to a tie-breaker procedure to determine which teams make the field. A loss by both ECU and UAB would put the Lady Pirates in the field as ECU has beaten the Lady Blazers in this season's only head-to-head matchup.

Southern Miss enters today's game with a 12-14 overall record and 5-9 league mark and also could clinch a tournament berth with a victory.
