Pirates Begin Third Week of Spring Drills
April 01, 2003 | Football
The Pirates, under the direction of first-year head coach John Thompson, went through an intense 150-minute session of drills in their ninth practice session of the 2003 spring. It was ECU's first practice since this past Saturday's live situational scrimmage.
"We want to get better on some technical things and executing some techniques that we introduced a couple weeks ago," said J.B. Grimes, ECU's offensive line coach and assistant head coach, after this afternoon's practice. "The key to getting better is repetition and that's what we want to do this week -- keep doing the same things and getting better at them."
Grimes said that his offensive line, which includes two-time All-Conference USA guard Brian Rimpf and all-conference candidate Doug White at center, is catching on fast to the new system presented by himself and offensive coordinator Rick Stockstill.
"Coach Stockstill did a wonderful job in coming in here and adapting some of the terminology that these guys have used here in the past," Grimes said. "That's helped us offensively with some carryover, especially with some of these veteran offensive linemen. In that regard, mentally, I think we're a little bit of a step ahead."
The Pirates will continue with practices this week on Wednesday and Friday at the Cliff Moore fields before gearing up for their third scrimmage in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The public is invited to Saturday's scrimmage and no admission will be charged.
