
ECU Bats Held In Check By Memphis Hurler

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina fell out of first place and one game back of Conference USA front-runner Southern Miss on Saturday night, falling to Memphis, 8-1, in game two of a day-night doubleheader. The Pirates claimed game one earlier in the day, 3-2.
Memphis starter Brandon Rowan (2-3) recorded the Tigers' first complete game effort of the season and held East Carolina (22-12-1, 9-5 CUSA) to just five hits and allowed one unearned run. Rowan retired 10 consecutive batters between the fifth and eighth inning and finished the game with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Memphis (12-22, 4-10 CUSA) scored two runs in third, fourth, and seventh innings, while adding a single run in both the sixth and ninth frame. Kyle Scott collected three hits and drove three runs, while Ryan Martin also drove in three runs, including two on his fifth home run of the season.
Adam Witter tallied two of the Pirates' four hits, while Kevin O'Sullivan collected ECU's only extra base hit with a double in the first inning.
ECU starter Neal Sears (2-4) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs ?one earned? on two hits. Glenn Tucker tossed 2.2 innings and struck out three, while Scott Andrews pitched the 2.1 innings.
The Pirates will try to win their fifth consecutive Conference USA series tomorrow as the two teams will do battle again beginning at 12:30 p.m.
