GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Fresh off a 2-1 Conference USA series victory against Cincinnati, East Carolina steps out of conference for a mid-week contest against the Duke Blue Devils. The Devils have lost six of their last seven entering the game and are winless on the road this season, 0-7. Junior left-hander Ashley Capps (3-1, 2.50 ERA) will make his fifth start of the season for ECU.
Capps will face a Blue Devil offense that has scored more than two runs just twice in its last seven games, while the Duke pitching staff has allowed five or more runs in each of the last six games. The Blue Devils have six players hitting .300 or higher led by freshman Adam Murray with a .339 average. Sophomore Senterrio Landrum amd senior Brian Patrick are also hitting over the .335 mark.
The Pirates are hitting .267, while the Blue Devils are batting .281 as team. ECU has scored 167 runs in 29 games, compared to Duke's 140 runs in 28 games. East Carolina's team ERA is nearly a full run better than that of the Blue Devils, 2.90:3.81.
