"We've put these guys through a lot over the past three weeks in 12 practices," said Pirate head coach John Thompson. "Every one of our practices has been physical and today was the most physical yet."
Running backs Marvin Townes and Dominique Hatcher carried the brunt of the offensive running plays. Townes carried the ball 17 times for 133 yards and a two touchdowns, including a 25-yard score. Hatcher rushed for 134 yards on 23 carries with a 19-yard touchdown. Hatcher also broke a 48-yard run on the second play from scrimmage.
Quarterback Paul Troth and receiver Terrance Copper highlighted the Pirate passing offense. Troth completed 10-of-23 passes for 160 and three touchdowns, including a 73-yard touchdown strike to Copper on the final play of the scrimmage. Copper caught seven balls for 142 yards and two touchdowns.
Senior linebacker Christian Wasielewski was the top tackler with seven tackles. Wasielewski also recorded the only interception of the scrimmage at the one-yard line. Linebacker Shawn Hodges made five tackles, including a pair of sacks. Defensive end Richard Koonce also recorded a pair of sacks and recovered a fumble.
"There are a lot of good things going on, but we have a lot of work to do," Thompson said. "We need to become more consistent, but we have some competitors out here. I am proud of this group."
The Pirates will practice Tuesday and Wednesday of this week at 3:45 p.m. Spring practice will conclude Saturday with the Purple-Gold Game at 3:00 p.m. Tickets purchased in advanced are $2, while tickets purchased at the gate will be $4.
