GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina University's football program has announced that Eric Johnson will join the Pirates in 2003, making him the 21st recruit to sign under first year head coach John Thompson.
Johnson, a 6-2, 205-pound running back from Okmulgee (Okla.) High School rushed for 1,233 yards on 241 carries his senior year while also playing defensive back. A quick and physical player, Johnson ran the 100- and 200-meter dashes, while also throwing a personal best of 55-feet in the shotput for the Bulldogs track team.
"We are thrilled to get a player like Eric," Thompson said. "He has a lot of speed and is a physical player coming from a real good program under coach Danny Morgan. He has a tremendous work ethic and we are excited to have him join our program."
Johnson marks the fifth defensive back to sign with the Pirates. The secondary was an area which Thompson felt he needed to strengthen when he took over the Pirate program in December of 2002.
