January 26, 2004 | Women's Basketball
CHICAGO -- East Carolina's Courtney Willis was named C-USA Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Jan. 25. Willis led the Pirates to an 80-55 victory over defending C-USA champion Charlotte on Sunday.
With 26 points, she recorded her 18th straight double-figure game of the season, while also becoming the ninth all-time scorer in school history (1,182).
For the weekend, she shot 78.6 percent from the field (11-of14), including a 4-of-4 effort from the free throw line.
ECU has won eight consecutive games, 12 of its last 13, and sits atop C-USA with DePaul as the only unbeaten teams in league action. With a 14-4 record, the Pirates are also off to their best start since the 1980-81 season, when it opened the year 15-3.
This marks the second time in school history that a Lady Pirate has been named C-USA Player of the Week. Jennifer Jackson claimed the first honors last season for the week of Dec. 9, 2002.
The Lady Pirates will return to action Saturday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. when they host Marquette in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
