October 12, 2004 | Football
In addition to serving as ECU's first JV win of the season, the triumph also snapped the Tigers' six-game win streak.
Dosh, who transferred into the Pirate program from Florida as a quarterback prior to the 2003 season, was moved to the defensive unit prior to the Tulane contest a week ago. After seeing action on special teams and on one play during the Pirates' 27-25 win over the Green Wave last Saturday, Dosh made his first official full-time debut during Tuesday's battle against Hargraves.
Offensively, freshman quarterback Patrick Pinkney completed 10-of-22 passes for 127 yards and a pair of TDs while sophomore running back Edwin Burke topped all ground gainers with 98 yards on 14 carries. Freshman Steve Rogers led all ECU receivers with four catches for 87 yards and two scores while junior Bryson Bowling also logged a touchdown reception. Sophomore receiver Will Bland, who picked up 36 yards on a pair of catches, also tossed a 39-yard pass on a flea-flicker play in the first quarter.
The Tigers (6-1) jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead early in the first quarter, benefiting from a blocked punt on East Carolina's first offensive possession before using a three-yard scoring run by local Greenville product and N.C. State signee Andre Brown at the 9:33 mark.
Bland capped a five-play, 70-yard drive with his scoring pass to Rogers with 4:48 to play in the opening period before the Pirates added a Pinkney-to-Bowling 14-yard TD toss with just 1:15 remaining in the opening half to stake ECU to a 12-7 intermission lead.
The Pirates (1-0) closed out the scoring with a 19-yard TD aerial from Pinkney to Rogers, which capped a nine-play, 63-yard drive midway through the fourth quarter and helped push the ECU lead to 19-7.
After surrendering 67 total first half yards, East Carolina limited Hargraves to just 25 in the final 30 minutes. In fact, the Pirates held the Tigers to -8 rushing yards in the second half. Junior defensive end Lorenza Pickett totaled eight stops, including two for lost yardage.
East Carolina held Brown, the Tigers' leading rusher, to just 46 yards on 13 carries.
