Lady Pirates Remain Perfect in C-USA Play

TAMPA, Fla. - Junior middle blocker Paige Howell registed a team-high 16 kills to lead four East Carolina players and junior outside hitter Erica Wilson posted a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs as the Lady Pirates remained perfect in Conference USA play knocking off USF in five games, 28-30, 30-27, 26-30, 30-20, 16-14, Sunday morning in The Corral. ECU (8-9, 2-0 C-USA) finished the opening weekend in C-USA undefeated for the first time since joining the conference in 2001 and won its first ever match against USF.

Jaime Bevan added 15 kills while freshman Mignon Dubenion had 11 kills. Junior libero Johanna Bertini had 20 digs for the Pirates. Flavia Silveira led USF with 27 kills and 25 digs. Michelle Stalbaum chipped in 23 kills for the Bulls.

ECU out-blocked USF, 14-9. Wilson finished with eight blocks while Howell led the team with nine blocks. The Pirates hit .205 in the match and held USF to a .188 attack percentage.

The Lady Pirates overcame a one-game deficit to win game two, 30-27. ECU hit .308 and put down 17 kills. USF won game three, 30-26. East Carolina out-hit USF, .281-.098 in game four and .207-.121 in game five to take the match.

Pam Ferris had nine kills and 12 digs for ECU. Sophomore setter Heidi Krug ran the offense finishing with 57 assists and nine digs.

East Carolina returns home this weekend to host C-USA foes Houston and TCU Friday and Saturday.
