GREENVILLE, N.C. ? Senior guard Jennifer Jackson sank a three-pointer with 1.2 seconds left to lift the "Gold" squad over the "Purple" 48-47 in Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
Jackson poured in game-high 21 points hitting 9-of-21 shots from the field, including 3-of-7 from the 3-point arc. Senior Viola Cooper added 10 points, while junior forward LaToya Horton scored eight and collected three boards and Shakira Clarke came away with seven rebounds and five points.
Senior Samantha Pankey scored 13 points in the losing effort for the Purple. Pankey was 5-of-9 from the floor and connected on all three of her 3-point attempts. Junior Ebonee Downey snagged seven boards and 12 points, going a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Center Soraya Hellaby recorded 10 points on 5-of-6 from the floor.
"I was very pleased with the team's effort," said third-year head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. "I think we are much further along at this point in the year than last year. Our young players are catching on to our style of play pretty well, but we still making mental mistakes early and making a couple of bad decisions.
"Overall I was pleased with the scrimmage and I thought it was very productive. It's the first time we have been in a game-like situation for this long. I'm looking forward to watching the tape and figuring out more things that we did wrong and see if we can't get it corrected by November 19th."
The Pirates will open the regular season at home on Friday, Nov. 19 when they host Duquesne at 7 p.m.
