Richmond, Va.. -- Senior's Jennifer Jackson and Shanita Sutton combined for 50 of East Carolina's 68 points to lead the Pirates to their third win of the season Thursday night against Virginia Commonwealth, 68-45, inside the ALLTEL Pavilion at the Stuart C. Seigel Center.
Jackson, who led all players with 30 points, scored 13 in the first half and moved into sole possession of 10th place on ECU's all-time scoring list with 1,205 career points. Sutton netted a career-high 20 points and recorded her eighth consecutive double-digit scoring game of the season.
The Pirates (3-8) led all but three minutes of the first half, when the Rams (4-5) took a 10-9 Kristina Cenaviciute drained a six foot jumper to give VCU its last lead of the game. ECU then put on a defensive display allowing just 15 points the remainder of the half and took a commanding lead into the half, 34-25.
"I am extremely pleased with the way our defense played tonight," said Head Coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. "Holding any team to 25 percent shooting during the course of a game is something to be proud of. We just need to build on this and keep working hard."
ECU will hit the road again this weekend when they travel to Buffalo, N.Y. on Sunday, Jan. 2 with a 2 p.m. tip scheduled.
