GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Size and speed are the main ingredients among one of the largest football signing classes in East Carolina University history, unveiled Wednesday by Pirate head coach John Thompson. The Pirates' 2004 signing class numbers 28, which includes five junior college transfers, 21 high school recruits and two military academy products.
Of the 28, 16 are projected to play defense at ECU and 12 are offensive players.
"We are extremely excited about the quality and quantity of this recruiting class," Thompson said. "We had some immediate needs which we feel we have addressed with a number of players that could make contributions right away. Moreover, these guys are quality people that will fit well within the Pirate football family."
The Pirates loaded up at the lineman positions, where 13 recruits are projected to perform--seven on defense and six on offense. The six offensive linemen average 6-5, 292 pounds.
Seven signees are projected for spots in the defensive secondary.
The Pirate coaching staff's strong ties to the state of Florida are reflected in the geographic makeup of the signees list. Sixteen of the 28 signees are originally from the Sunshine State. Other new Pirates hail from Arizona, Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, and Virginia, as well as North and South Carolina.
The signing list was to be officially presented to the public at a special signing day party held at ECU's Murphy Center late Wednesday afternoon. The event, which featured video highlights of each recruit, attracted a crowd of nearly 400 in 2003, Thompson's first year at East Carolina.
