FORT WORTH, Texas - Sakellie Daniels scored a career high 26 points to lead No. 7 seed Charlotte (16-12, 8-6) to a 74-61 victory in the first round of the 2004 Conference USA Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas. The 49ers advance to the quarterfinals for the third straight year, where they will face host and No. 2 seed TCU.
Charlotte held a 31-25 halftime advantage, forcing 13 East Carolina (14-14, 5-10) turnovers in the first 20 minutes. The 49ers extended their lead to as many as 17 points on three different occasions before ECU cut it down to nine with 3:41 left on a three-pointer by Keisha Anthony. The Pirates would fail to cut into the lead on three consecutive trips down the court, however, and the 49ers eventually would extend the lead and win the game by making their final six free throw attempts.
The Pirates were paced in scoring by Alisha Bishop with 16 and Keisha Anthony with 15. A total of 37 of ECU's 61 points came from their bench. The Pirates were hampered by an ankle injury to leading scorer Courtney Willis in the first half. The first team All-C-USA selection was limited to five minutes and was held to three points.
