
Bunn, No. 5 Pirates Hold Off TCU, 7-2

TCU (29-21, 15-10 C-USA) out-hit ECU, 9-7, but the four errors led to two unearned runs. Bunn allowed two earned runs on three hits and struck out three before giving way to Dustin Sasser, who earned his third save of the season. Sasser pitched three scoreless innings, giving up three hits. Clayton Jerome (7-4) suffered the loss for the Horned Frogs allowing five earned runs on five hits through four innings.
Chad Huffman led TCU going 3-for-5 while Austin Adams went 3-for-3.
TCU scored the first run of the game in the top of the first after loading the bases. Bo Cogbill's sacrifice fly scored Shelby Ford putting the Horned Frogs ahead, 1-0.
Trevor Lawhorn's RBI single brought in Ryan Jones tying the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the first. The Pirates added two more runs in the bottom of the third. Billy Richardson scored on Trevor Lawhorn's sacrifice fly giving ECU a 2-1 lead. Jones came home on when Ryan Norwood reached on a two-base error as the Pirates grabbed a 3-1 lead.
TCU threatened to tie the game in the top of the fourth. German Duran singled and Austin Adams walked to start of the fourth. After J.J. Estrada bunted the runners over, Kyle Dahlberg drove in Duran pulling the Horned Frogs within, 3-2. TCU had runners on the corners before the Pirates caught Adams trying to steal home. Bunn got Ramon Moses to fly out to center field to end the inning.
John Poppert doubled in Drew Costanzo in the bottom of the fourth as the Pirates went ahead, 4-2. Poppert scored on an error to make it 5-2 in favor of the Pirates before Trevor Lawhorn drove in his third run of the game for a 6-2 lead.
Darryl Lawhorn homered for the 10th time this season putting the Pirates ahead, 7-2, in the bottom of the fifth.
East Carolina and TCU will play the second game of the series Saturday at 2 p.m. LHP Brody Taylor will start for the Pirates while TCU will counter with LHP Eugene Espineli.
