Mathews Named to Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina freshman right-hander Shane Mathews has been named to the Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American team announced by the publication. Mathews joins six Conference USA players earning the honoring. The six honorees are the second-most C-USA players to receive Freshman All-American honors in one season. Conference USA Tournament champion TCU produced three of the honorees, while regular season champion East Carolina, Southern Miss and USF all had one each.
Mathews helped the Pirates to one of the best records in college baseball in 2004. He posted a 7-1 record. Mathews made 11 starts and 18 appearances overall, pitching 77 1/3 innings. He struck out 54 batters and walked just 19, while posting a 3.72 ERA, second among starters.
East Carolina finished the season 51-13 and advanced to the NCAA Super Regional round for the second in the program's history.
