2005, 2006 ECU Non-Divisional Opponents Announced
August 25, 2004 | Football
The Irving, Tex.-based conference officially announced its 2005 and 2006 non-divisional opponent selections for football, with ECU facing both Rice and SMU for the first time in school history under the new format. In addition, the Pirates will renew a series with Tulsa which has been dormant since ECU posted a 28-7 win over the Golden Hurricanes in 1995.
The scheduling model, which was approved during the athletic director's meeting last week, calls for each team to play four home and four away games in league play. In addition to playing every team in its division once, each school will play three games against opponents from the opposite division.
The new-look conference takes effect next season with the Pirates competing in the East Division of C-USA against Central Florida, Marshall, Memphis, Southern Mississippi and UAB. The West Division is comprised of Houston, Rice, SMU, Texas-El Paso, Tulane and Tulsa.
In addition, the Pirates home and away conference schedule was announced for 2005 and will be reversed in 2006. ECU will play host to Central Florida, Rice, Southern Mississippi and UAB while traveling to Marshall, Memphis, Tulsa and SMU.
Also beginning in 2005, Conference USA will conduct a football championship game between the winner of each division with the contest being played at the site of the school with the highest conference winning percentage.
