ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop's Mary Hock led the Lady Eagles with a match-high 19 kills
and hit .567 as the Lady Eagles defeated East Carolina in three straight games (30-23,
30-21, 30-13) to win the opener in the Winthrop/Hilton Garden Invitational
Tournament at Winthrop Coliseum Friday night. Junior outside hitter Erica Wilson led
the Lady Pirates with nine kills and 10 digs.
ECU only hit .044 as a team while the host team Winthrop hit .444 on the evening. Junior libero Johanna Bertini led ECU defensively with 12 digs.
Taryn Surbaugh had five blocks while Emily Heckl had 41 set assists for the Lady Eagles. Senior Sarah Billingsley carried the Eagle defense with 11 digs.
East Carolina wraps up play in the tournament Saturday morning when the Lady Pirates play Belmont at 10 a.m. before finishing out the tournament with UNC Greensboro at 4:30 p.m.
