
Volleyball Hosts Campbell Tuesday Night in Final Nonconference Match

ECU had the mid-week off last week. The Lady Pirates fell to William & Mary last Friday night at home in four games, 28-30, 30-18, 30-28, 30-24. Junior libero Johanna Bertini tied her career-high with 22 digs to lead ECU's defense. Erica Wilson and Paige Howell each recorded 14 kills for the Lady Pirates. Howell hit .591 in the match. Freshmen Mignon Dubenion and Kelley Wernert each had nine kills for the Lady Pirates. Sophomore setter Heidi Krug finished with 52 assists.
Wilson continues to lead the team with 152kills while averaging 3.04 kills per game. Sophomore middle blocker Jaime Bevan has tallied 142 kills and 47 total blocks. Junior middle blocker Paige Howell has made a big impact in her first season with the Pirates. Howell is hitting a team-best .347 entering the week with 135 kills and 38 blocks. Defensively, Bertini already has 200 digs in 14 matches and averages right at 4.00 digs per game.
Campbell (5-8) is riding a three-game win streak after defeating North Carolina A&T, Gardner-Webb and Norfolk State last week. The Lady Camels swept through Norfolk State, 30-24, 30-23, 30-19 behind 10 kills from Tabitha Turner. Rachel Templin posted a match-high 12 kills to lead the Fighting Camels to a 3-0 (30-21, 30-25, 30-28) victory over conference rival Gardner-Webb. Turner has posted 160 kills through 13 matches this season and averages 3.33 kills per game. Templin has accounted for 108 kils and 51 blocks.
Last season in Buies Creek, Pam Ferris posted 11 kills on a .733 attack percentage and a career-high seven service aces to lead the East Carolina Pirate volleyball team to a tough 3-0 (30-23, 30-26, 30-10) victory over Campbell in Carter Gymnasium. Bevan added eight kills and four block assists. Krug directed the offense with 37 assists. East Carolina served well during the match, especially in game three, posting 14 service aces to just three for Campbell. Campbell outhit the Pirates in games one and two, .250-to-.200 and .414-to-.222, before ECU buckled down in the third and final game with a decisive .611-to-.111 attack percentage edge.
East Carolina and Campbell have met 31 times on the court with the Pirates holding a 26-5 all-time record. ECU head coach Colleen Munson is 6-0 all-time against Campbell.
After Tuesday night's match, ECU hits the road for the Conference USA opening weekend. The Lady Pirates play at UAB at 7 p.m. Friday night before heading to USF to take on the Bulls at 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
LADY PIRATES TO "DIG FOR THE CURE" AGAINST SOUTHERN MISS The East Carolina Volleyball team will take part in the "Dig for the Cure" to help benefit research efforts for breast cancer. ECU has designated its home match against Southern Miss on Oct .23 as its "Dig for the Cure" night. Players will collect pledges from the community. Fans can pledge per dig or pledge one flat fee.
