
ECU Finishes Day One of Pirate Invitational, 1-1

In the final match between ECU and Furman, ECU overcame a 22-16 deficit in game one to defeat Furman, 30-28. The Lady Paladins won games two and three, 30-28 and 31-29, after out-hittting ECU, .239-.167, and .318-.200. ECU managed to take game four, 32-30. ECU took an 8-6 advantage in game five before Furman finished the game on a 9-2 run to end the game and take the match. Jaime Bevan and Pam Ferris each added 17 kills for the Lady Pirates. Erica Wilson had 12 kills while Ferris added a double-double with 13 digs. Johanna Bertini had 18 digs to go along with 13 digs from Caitlin Daly. Purser and Aguocha each had double-doubles finishing with 11 and 10 digs respectively. Furman Libero Rosey Cashman recorded 18 digs for the Paladins.
EAST CAROLINA DEFEATED HIGH POINT, 30-21, 30-21, 24-30, 30-26 Junior outside hitter Erica Wilson put down a team-high 16 kills and recorded 13 digs for her first double-double of the season while sophomore Jaime Bevan added 13 kills as East Carolina won its opener in the City Hotel & Bistro Pirate Invitational over High Point, 30-21, 30-21, 24-30 and 30-26, in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. Wilson and Bertini each finished with 13 digs as ECU out-hit the Lady Panthers, .254-.167. ECU had 11.5 team blocks led by Bevan and Ferris who each had five blocks. Jamie Kaufman led High Point with 17 kills while hitting .400. Libero Kim Anderson turned in a match-high 19 digs.
MERCER DEFEATED LAMAR, 26-30, 30-24, 31-29, 30-18 Julie Darty led three Mercer players in double-figures with 20 kills and Liz Kane had 25 digs as Mercer won the first match of the City Hotel & Bistro Pirate Invitational Friday morning. Katie Plummer and Jackie Viren both posted a double-double for Mercer. Plummer added 12 kills and 25 digs while Jackie Viren had 10 kills and 17 digs. Molli Abel led Lamar with 13 kills. Erica Brown had 12 kills and Buchi Okoh added 7 kills. Lamar setter Chelsea Johnson recorded a double-double with 35 set assists and 23 digs.
LAMAR DEFEATED FURMAN, 30-27, 27-30, 30-28, 30-16 Lamar's Moli Abel posted a team-high 18 kills and Erica Brown added 13 kills as Lamar regrouped from a loss earlier in the day to defeat Furman in the third match of the tournament. Alisa Jackson had 12 kills for Lamar. Furman's Julia Fredrickson finished with a match-high 19 kills to lead four Lady Paladins in double figures. Aguocha added 13 kills and 12 digs for a double-double. Purser tallied 12 kills while teammate Ally Hock had 11 kills for Furman.
HIGH POINT DEFEATED MERCER, 27-30, 23-30, 30-19, 30-24, 15-8 High Point's Ashley Johnson posted a match-high 18 kills and the Lady Panthers overcame a 2-0 deficiit to rally to defeat Mercer in five games, 3-2. Lindsey Pickens had a double-double for the Panthers finishing with 13 kills and 13 digs. Kaufman added 14 kills while Kim Anderson finished with 26 digs. Julie Darty led Mercer with 17 kills and 15 digs. Katie had 14 kills. Libero Liz Kane finished with 24 digs. High Point did most of its damage on defense. The Lady Panthers outblocked Mercer, 17-7, led by Tara Mahoney who who had eight blocks.
The teams will wrap up the tournament Saturday. East Carolina will face Mercer at 1 p.m. and Lamar in the nightcap at 7 p.m. Furman faces High Point in Saturday's opener at 11 a.m. Lamar and High Point will meet at 3 p.m. Furman faces Mercer at 5 p.m.
