
ECU Volleyball Heads to Winthrop Tournament

The Lady Pirates swept through North Carolina A&T last Tuesday night in three games, 30-17, 30-26,30-22. Junior middle blocker Paige Howell led ECU with 10 kills. Junior libero Johanna Bertini tallied 15 digs as ECU improved to 4-2 on the season. Howell leads the team with 84 kills averaging 3.82 kills per game while hitting .424. Junior Erica Wilson has 77 kills on the season. Sophomore setter Heidi Krug runs the Lady Pirate offense averaging 12.3 assists per game. She already has 283 set assists and 16 service aces. Bertini anchors the defense with 91 digs through six matches. Sophomore middle Jaime Beven averages 1.17 blocks per game and already has 27 blocks on the season.
Winthrop brings a 5-1 record into its' own tournament including a win over Atlantic Coast Conference member Clemson in five games. Junior outside hitter Mary Hock was selected the first Big South Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for 2004 earlier in the week. She compiled 80 kills and 76 digs in the five matches, including a 20-kill and 20-dig performance in the season opening win at Davidson. As a team, the Lady Eagles hit .242 having put down 346 kills.
Belmont is 5-0 on the young season. The Lady Bruins defeated Tennessee State in three games Tuesday night, 30-25, 30-15, 30-14. Erin Janson led Belmont in the win posting 11 kills. Lindsay Cleveland leads the team with 70 kills while hitting .325. Cleveland was named the Atlantic Sun Volleyball Player of the Week after helping the Bruins to a perfect 4-0 start to the season, including the team championship at the Aces Invitational over the weekend. For the week, Cleveland averaged 4.85 kills, 0.54 assists, 0.31 aces, 3.81 digs, and 0.38 blocks in 13 games played. The Bruins lost only one game in four matches last week. Setter Collen Nilson runs the offense with 213 set assists. As a team, the Lady Bruins hit .276 and average 16 digs per game.
UNC Greensboro is 1-2 on the season after falling to Gardner Webb in five games and UT Martin in four games. The Lady Spartans defeated Lipscomb in five games for their only win of the season. Alysia Rosvold averages 2.71 kills per game and has 38 kills in three matches. As a team, UNCG only hits .151 and averages 13.8 digs per game.
ECU has had meetings with all three teams in this weekend's tournament. The Lady Pirates are 1-0 all-time against Belmont. ECU leads the series with Winthrop, 8-6, and UNC Greensboro, 13-11.
After the Winthrop Tournament, the Lady Pirates continue their seven match road swing. ECU travels to Charleston, S.C. to take part in the College of Charleston Tournament Sept. 17-18.
