Defense Is Key In Pirates Win Over Saint Louis

GREENVILLE, N.C. ? The East Carolina women's basketball team opened the second half with an 11-3 run and never looked back as it defeated Saint Louis 66-40 in Conference USA action Sunday afternoon. With their third straight win, ECU moves to 6-9 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the Billikens are 1-14 and 0-2 in C-USA.
The Pirates jumped out early on the Billikens behind a pair of Jennifer Jackson jumpers and found themselves up 11-2 in the first five minutes of play. But a three-pointer by Mia Johnson sparked a SLU 14-3 run to take their only lead of the game, 16-14 with nine minutes left until the half. East Carolina took advantage of their size underneath and went on a 10-0 run behind three consecutive baskets by sophomore Amanda Mills and to a 28-18 lead at the intermission.
Senior Shanita Sutton sparked the Pirates 11-3 run (39-21) collecting six of her 17 points in the first five minutes of play in the second half. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Jackson and Viola Cooper gave ECU its largest lead of the game 31 (66-35) and the Pirates cruised to its second straight win in C-USA action.
Jackson lead all players with 19 points and 11 rebounds, recording her third double-double of the season and 15th of her career on her way to moving into sole possession of seventh place on ECU's all-time scoring list with 1,276 career points.
Mia Johnson paced the Billikens with 14 points on four 3-pointers but no other SLU player reached double figures. Heather King and Krystle Hatton led the Bills with eight rebounds.
