
Pirates Fall In Three To Houston

HOUSTON, Texas--East Carolina volleyball fell to the Houston Cougars, 3-0, Saturday night at the Athletics/Alumni Center. Kariny Ritter led the Cougars with 22 kills while Pam Ferris and Mignon Dubenion recorded 11 and 10 kills respectively for ECU. With the loss, ECU falls to 13-9 overall and 4-5 in Conference USA play while Houston improves to 11-9, 6-2 in C-USA play.
In addition to Ferris and Dubenion offensively, Kelley Wernert and Kim Jefferson each added nine kills. Jefferson did not commit an error on 16 attack attempts while leading the Pirates with a .562 hitting percentage. Heidi Krug led the Pirates with 41 assists while also adding seven digs and a team-high three aces. Libero Trish Monroe led the Pirates defensively with 13 digs while Dubenion led the effort at the net with two block assists.
Justine Farmer also recorded double-digit kills for Houston, finishing with 12 kills on 28 attack attempts. Ritter and Farmer combined on 34 kills and 70 attack attempts while committing a combined four errors. Jennifer Hohl directed the Cougar offense with 44 assists while Jaci Gonzalez led the defense with 15 digs. Becca Sartori and Millicent Martin collected four and three block assists respectively en route to the victory.
Houston defeated East Carolina 30-21, 30-22, 30-25. The Cougars out-hit ECU .381-to-.258 while Houston collected 52 digs to ECU's 50.
The Pirates will take the week off before returning home to host SMU and Tulsa this weekend inside Minges Coliseum. The Pirates and the Mustangs will play Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. before taking on Tulsa on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.
