
Purple Wins Annual Men's Basketball Intrasquad Clash Against Gold

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Guards Japhet McNeil and Tom Hammonds each scored 10 points to lead Purple to a seven-point victory over Gold, 43-36, inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum Saturday during ECU's annual public intrasqaud scrimmage.
Sophomore Jonathan Hart also posted 10 points to lead the Gold team, while senior Corey Rouse added nine points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
"Today let us know about some things that we need to continue to work on," said Pirate head coach Ricky Stokes. "There were some bright spots and by enlarge I thought we gave a great effort today."
Purple trailed by five midway through the first half before freshman Jeff Robinson's three-point basket sparked a 10-4 run to close out the first half and give Purple a 23-22 halftime lead. It stretched its lead to as many as nine before holding on for a seven-point victory.
Junior college transfer Tyronne Beale added nine points in the Purple victory, while grabbing a team-high six rebounds. Senior Mike Castro, who chipped in eight points, also yanked six boards as the Purple won the battle of the boards 21-16.
In all the Pirates' proved to be very unselfish on both sides recording a total of 20 assists on 30 made baskets. McNeil and junior college transfer Courtney Captain dished out five assists each.
Newcomer Jeremy Ingram led all players with a game-high four steals.
East Carolina plays its lone exhibition game of the season against North Carolina Central at home on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. The Pirates open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 18 at home against North Carolina A&T.
