
East Carolina Hosts NCAA Southeast Cross Country Championship

GREENVILLE, N.C.--East Carolina University is hosting the men's and women's 2005 NCAA Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships Saturday, Nov. 12 at Overton's Lake Kristi course. The event is scheduled to begin with the men's race at 11:00 a.m. followed by the start of the women's race taking place at 12:15 p.m.
Lake Kristi, the site of each NCAA Southeast Regional Championship dating back to the 2002 season, serves as the home course for ECU cross country. The course has also played host to other prestigious cross country meets including the 2001 Conference USA Cross Country Championships, 1996 Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships and several North Carolina Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships.
Although the course has changed yearly since 2002, this year's layout will pattern that of 2004. Last year's winners were Josh McDougal of Liberty University (30:06.4) who set the 10k course record on the men's side, and North Carolina's Carol Henry (19.57.5) who established the women's 6k record.
THE HOST PIRATES
The Lady Pirates have been led all season by seniors Jessica Collins and Caitlin Littlefield. Collins' best performance of the year came at the C-USA Championships (17:58.70) where she finished 12th. Her highest finish was second in the 5k McAlister's Deli Invite. Littlefield, one of four on the squad to participate in all scheduled events, also had her best time at the C-USA Championship crossing the stripe at 18:42.94 (30th).
On the men's side, senior Kristian Jorgensen has been the staple of the upperclassmen for the Pirates with freshmen Chris Belfiore giving coach Joe Catania a sample of what is on the horizon. Jorgensen has four top-25 finishes on the season, including the UNC Wilmington Invitational, North Carolina Invite, McAlister's Deli Invite and Conference USA Championships. Belfiore, which finished among the first 30 participants in each of the aforementioned events, set his career-best time at with a mark of 19:41.07 in the UNC Wilmington Invitational.
