
LADY PIRATES FALL JUST SHORT OF MARSHALL 57-54

HUNTINGTON, W.V.--The East Carolina women's basketball ended its six-game winning streak following a 57-54 loss at the hands of Marshall (5-3, 1-0) inside the Cam Henderson Center. It marks the first for the Lady Pirates since the season-opener against Duquesne.
Opening the Conference USA schedule on the road for only the second time since joining, ECU was led by Cherie Mills with 20 points and five rebounds. Teammate Jessica Slack added 15 points, as the only other ECU player to score in double figures.
The Lady Pirates (6-2, 0-1), trailing by as many as 10 points on two occasions in the second half, began shaving into a 41-31 Marshall lead at the 10:26 mark. Following jump shots by Cherie Mills, and a pair of free throws by Jasmine Young and a Jessica Slack 3-pointer, the Thundering Herd held a 41-40 edge.
Marshall upped the lead to 47-42 at the 5:39 mark of the game, however the Lady Pirates again closed the gap to three following a second key shot by Slack. Despite a tough defensive effort down the stretch, ECU was unable to get any closer than three points in the final 1:35 of the contest.
In a tough shooting half for both teams, assumed the trifecta of Slack, Cherie Mills and Young paced East Carolina with five points each. Neither team scored until the 17:20 mark when ECU jumped out to a 3-0 advantage following a shot from beyond the arc by Jasmine Young. Following a layup by LaCoya Terry just under three minutes later, the Lady Pirates their largest lead of the half with a 5-0 lead.
Jessica Slack buried a three-pointer with 3:28 to knot the game at 19-19, before Marshall closed out the first half on an 8-0 run. Connecting on 7-of-31 shots in the first half, including two three-pointers, the Lady Pirates trailed at the half for the first time since they faced Longwood on Nov. 26.
East Carolina returns home for on Sunday, Dec. 18 contest with James Madison University, with tip-off slated for 2 p.m. Every fan which brings in a non-perishable canned food item will receive free admission to the game.
