TOLEDO, Ohio - Kashif Payne had 18 points and Toledo defeated East Carolina 73-62 Wednesday night despite failing to make a basket for almost the last six minutes.
The Rockets (6-2) hit 15-of-22 free throws over the final 5:23. Sammy Villegas, who scored 15 points, made Toledo's last field goal, a jumper for a 58-49 lead with 5:56 to play.
Payne was 8-of-8 at the foul line and Justin Ingram was 6-of-6, all during the closing moments. Toledo went 23-of-32 at the line in the second half after shooting 3-for-8 before halftime.
The Pirates (3-6) lost a 32-28 halftime lead by shooting 27.3 percent (6-for-22) in the second half, falling for the fifth consecutive game.
Toledo scored 10 of the first 14 points of the second half, including the go-ahead basket by Jerrah Young 4:27 into the period that put the Rockets ahead to stay, 38-36.
Toledo used a 9-2 run midway through the second half for a nine-point lead at 53-44, its biggest to that point.
In the first half, ECU connected on 54.2 percent (13-for-24) of its field goal attempts. After trailing by three early, the Pirates went on a 15-3 run to take a nine-point lead, 19-10, on a leaner in the lane by freshman Jeff Robinson as the shot clock expired with 10:35 left in the half.
ECU freshman Sam Hinnant led East Carolina with 16 points and junior Courtney Captain netted 14 points.
Senior Corey Rouse recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds and in the process became the 19th player in school history to tally 500 career rebounds. His 512 career rebounds rank 18th on the school's all-time list.
Florentino Valencia added 12 points for the Rockets.
East Carolina returns to action Wednesday, December 28 against Limestone inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
