
Lady Pirate Hoops Falls To UAB 75-70

BIRMINGHAM, AL. -- The East Carolina women's basketball team dropped its fifth game in Conference USA action Monday night as they fell to UAB 75-70 at Bartow Arena.
The Pirates (8-15, 4-5) got to within three points, 73-70, with 10 seconds left on the clock, but the Blazers (6-17, 3-8) were able to connect on two free throws to seal the Pirates fate.
Viola Cooper drained her first three-pointer of the game at the 7:17 mark to spark an ECU 13-7 run heading into the half giving the Pirates a 29-28 lead.
Shanita Sutton led three Pirates in double-figures with 16 points, 14 coming in the second half, while fellow Pirates Jennifer Jackson and Cooper each added 11. Jackson moved into fifth place on ECU's all-time scoring list (1,375) passing fellow Pirate Courtney Willis when she connected on the first of two free throws with 19 seconds left in the game.
For UAB, Carmen Guzman collected a game-high 22 points to lead four Blazer's in double-digits. Katie Billue and Lauren Brittingham each netted 11, while Crystal McFadden added 10.
Junior LaToya Horton grabbed 14 of the Pirates 39 rebounds, which was her season and conference-high.
The Pirates will be back on the court Friday night, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. when they host Cincinnati at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
