Spring Notebook No. 6
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Calling it a "very encouraging" start, East Carolina Head Football Coach Skip Holtz wrapped up the second week of spring workouts by guiding the Pirates through a 110-minute practice Friday morning at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
The session was ECU's sixth of the spring and fourth conducted in pads.
After establishing the program's first depth chart over the weekend, Holtz and his staff will begin preparing the Pirates for their first scrimmage of the spring, scheduled for next Friday (April 1) which will follow a pair of full-gear afternoon practices Monday and Wednesday.
"We taxed them a little this morning," Holtz said. "It almost was like a two-a-day scenario we have in fall camp, working last night and then coming right back with an early morning workout. Yet, they made it count and I was pleased with their effort."
The Pirates completed their first phase of the spring with detailed individual drill work, but will now begin schematic offensive and defensive team instruction in earnest once the two-deep is in place. Holtz also cited the continuation of strong senior leadership as one of the positive experiences coming out of the first two weeks of work.
"I can't say enough positive things about our senior leadership," Holtz explained. "I'm really encouraged because that gives us a chance to be competitive from the very start. I don't know if we'll pick up every block or hit every hole correctly, but it's a solid beginning and a great foundation to build on."
Holtz also announced three more positional changes Friday, moving junior tight end Josh Coffman to the offensive line, sophomore defensive lineman Zach Slate to linebacker and sophomore defensive tackle Wendell Chavis to defensive end.
After enjoying the Easter Weekend, East Carolina will resume its schedule Monday with a 4:00 p.m. workout at the Cliff Moore Practice Facility.
