GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina conducted its second official spring workout with a 130-minute practice late Wednesday afternoon at the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
After opening camp with a pair of introductory workouts in shorts and helmets, first-year head coach Skip Holtz and his staff will direct the Pirates' first full-pad session Thursday afternoon before taking a week off for spring break.
Holtz remained in an evaluation mode throughout Wednesday's practice, which was held in cool and breezy conditions with temperatures hovering in the upper 40s. ECU spent the session working on re-establishing positional fundamentals while slowly grasping initial concepts of Holtz' new offensive and defensive schemes.
"We got a lot done in the two days with shorts," Holtz said. "At the same time, I think we're all excited to move on and start to polish things up in pads in terms of installing our offense and defense. I'm very pleased with the attitude and intensity that we've had so far, and that's a good start because there's obviously a lot of work left."
Before closing the practice with traditional field goal and extra point work, the Pirates wrapped up the team portion of the workout with a spirited 11-on-11 drill which featured all three quarterbacks on ECU's active roster participating in rushing and short-to-mid-range passing exercises along with the unit's running backs and receiver corps.
"The defense is ahead right now, but I believe that is customary at this early point in the spring," Holtz added. "We've thrown so much at our offense in the short time we've been out here, I think it is somewhat expected."
After a 10-day layoff, ECU will open its second week of workouts Monday, March 21 beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the practice facility and will start preparations for the program's first full intra-squad scrimmage scheduled for Friday, April 1 at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
