ECU Football Preseason Camp Notebook #11-12
August 15, 2005 | Football
GREENVILLE, N.C. ? After conducting their first scrimmage of the season Saturday and following with an off-day Sunday, East Carolina Head Football Coach Skip Holtz and the Pirates returned to work Monday with a pair of workouts at the Cliff Moore Practice Facility.
The twin sessions marked the second of three two-a-day practices scheduled during preseason camp. In all, ECU has eight more workouts remaining, including Saturday's scrimmage, prior to the start of classes Aug. 24.
After battling high temperature and humidity levels during their morning practice, the Pirates got a little relief later in the day with cloudy and breezy conditions after waiting out a 90-minute lightning delay which interrupted drills after the first eight periods.
Holtz reaffirmed his evaluation stance after Saturday's scrimmage, noting it was designed to make personnel decisions and put people in the right place.
"We've moved on to working exclusively with the offense and defense," Holtz explained. "The scrimmage had its purpose of identifying where to put our personnel. In terms of the game itself, it's difficult to evaluate. Sure, I was pleased that the No. 1 and No. 2 offenses didn't commit any turnovers. At the same time, I was disappointed that our No. 1 and No. 2 defenses didn't create any turnovers."
The Pirates will return to a single workout schedule for the rest of the week leading up to the playing of the program's second scrimmage Saturday afternoon, which will determine the depth chart heading into official game preparation efforts for the season-opener against Duke Sept. 3.
NOTES: Holtz confirmed that true freshman Jerek Hewett (West Brunswick HS) has been moved to the wide receiver position ? Hewett, a national track champion in the 100-meter sprint earlier this summer, was signed and opened camp as a defensive back before experiencing action on the offensive unit for the first time during Saturday's scrimmage (two rushes, two receptions) ? ECU closed out the morning practice with two-minute drills in which junior quarterback James Pinkney completed five consecutive passes before capping his efficiency with a 30-yard TD strike to sophomore tailback Chris Johnson near the back of the endzone ? The Pirates ended the afternoon session with an overtime simulation session which junior cornerback Erode Jean highlighted with an interception ? Team chaplain Chuck Young (Sportswork Ministry) provided the team its post-practice fruit snack with an ample supply of sliced watermelon as players were exiting the practice facility ? Tuesday's Practice Time: 3:00 p.m. ? 5:55 p.m.; Season Opener: Sept. 3 vs. Duke (1:00 p.m.)
