ECU Football Preseason Camp Notebook #16
GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina Head Coach Skip Holtz put the finishing touches on his team's final preparation effort for Saturday's scrimmage with a short and light practice session Friday afternoon at the Cliff Moore Practice Facility.
Holtz indicated all levels of the Pirates' current personnel list would be utilized during the closed contest, which is tentatively scripted for a minimum of 90 to 100 plays depending on ECU's injury situation during the scrimmage.
"I'm excited about the scrimmage since this one will be a more traditional version compared to what we did a week ago," Holtz explained. "Each offensive possession will begin with a first down and the goal will be to move the ball and score without a play cap. On the other side, our defense will obviously key on forcing turnovers and holding them to three downs. We still have some depth chart issues to solve, so we want to come out of it and be in a position to name our starters by Monday when we begin working on Duke."
Similar to Thursday's work, East Carolina spent the majority of the shells-only practice conducting 11-on-11 ball movement work with the first, second and third units after emphasizing punt block drills during its special teams session. Pirate quarterbacks James Pinkney (7-of-10), Brett Clay (3-of-6) and Rob Kass (4-of-5) combined on 14-of-21 passing during the 50-minute segment.
"We got in a lot of team work today, and at this stage, that's what it is all about," Holtz continued. "The emphasis is on the importance of making a play out there. I'm curious to see how far we are away from becoming a team, but I know we are getting close."
NOTES: Senior OG Trey Magee (knee) and senior WR Bobby Good (hamstring) are listed as day-to-day and are questionable for Saturday's scrimmage ... Junior CB Erode Jean suffered an upper leg injury early during Friday's session and is doubtful while senior TE Sean Harmon remains out as he continues knee rehabilitation ... Pinkney also turned in a 32-yard run and 23-yard scoring pass to Aundrae Allison during team work ... Senior CB Demetrius Hodges sparked the defense with an interception ... Senior linebacker Chris Moore picked off a tipped pass during the first play of ECU's two-minute drills ... Kass guided the Pirate offense on two long "hurry up" drives which also included a stretch of five consecutive completions ... Saturday's Scrimmage Time: 3:10 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.; Season Opener: Sept. 3 vs. Duke (1:00 p.m.)
