ECU Football Preseason Camp Notebook #18
GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina moved one step closer to the official end of preseason camp by completing its last two-a-day schedule Monday morning and evening at the Cliff Moore Practice Facility.
The Pirates worked for 90 minutes in helmets and shorts during the morning session before returning in full gear for a two-hour practice under the lights. Head coach Skip Holtz will close camp with a single workout early Tuesday afternoon before returning to an in-season schedule Wednesday which also marks the first day of classes on the East Carolina University campus.
"We went light in the morning to give everyone a chance to get their legs back after Saturday's scrimmage," Holtz said. "I think everyone is looking forward to returning to the routine of the season, if there is such a thing. Again, I was pleased with the intensity and enthusiasm out there which I think was heightened a little as we began working on Duke from a preparation standpoint."
In addition to implementing offensive and defensive game plans to ready themselves for the Blue Devils' arrival Sept. 3, the Pirates again keyed on plenty of ball movement work, special teams exercises, two-minute and overtime drills during both sessions Monday.
NOTES: Monday marked the return of two familiar faces to the quarterback position - freshman Davon Drew and junior Kort Shankweiler ... Drew was finally cleared to play after sitting out the last two weeks because of a sore shoulder while Shankweiler opened camp at the fullback slot and will now rotate between the two ...Drew completed all three of his pass attempts during the evening practice, including a 20-yarder to Juwon Crowell, while Shankweiler was 1-of-3 ... Both players served as ECU's only active quarterbacks during the spring in the absence of junior James Pinkney ... Pinkney was sharp during the latter session, completing 6-of-7 passes, including a 45-yard strike to junior Kevin Roach ... Sophomore linebacker Durwin Lamb picked off a pass during ball movement drills to highlight the defense ... Senior TE Sean Harmon also returned to contact duty Monday after being sidelined for most of camp rehabilitating a knee injury ... Holtz was pleased to announce there were no significant injuries suffered during Saturday's 100-play intra-squad scrimmage ... Tuesday's Practice Time: 1:00 p.m. - 3:40 p.m.; Season Opener: Sept. 3 vs. Duke (1:00 p.m.)
