ECU Football Preseason Camp Notebook #4
August 08, 2005 | Football
GREENVILLE, N.C. ? East Carolina completed its final tune-up before engaging in full gear work with a three-hour practice in shorts and shoulder pads at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Monday afternoon.
Beginning Tuesday, the Pirates will don full pads for each of their traditional workout sessions, which includes the preseason camp's first of two official two-a-day practices scheduled for Wednesday.
"After four days of practice, we finally got 'good on good' (offense vs. defense) at the same time," said head coach Skip Holtz. "Everyone is hustling and getting better and that's what good teams need to do to improve. I expect us to step it up another notch and keeping working toward our goals when we go in full pads Tuesday."
Similar to Sunday's workout, ECU conducted a live 30-minute scrimmage-like team session at the end of practice which matched all levels of the Pirates' depth chart. The defensive unit enjoyed another notable effort, accounting for a pair of scores on sophomore cornerback Travis Williams' 45-yard interception return and senior linebacker Richard Koonce's 30-yard fumble return.
As has been the case each night, the East Carolina coaching staff conducted two hours of team, special teams and position meetings after Monday's workout before dismissing the squad for a 9:00 p.m. dinner at Todd Dining Hall.
NOTES: Senior WR Bryson Bowling underwent further evaluations on his right ring finger and has been listed as day-to-day ? Juniors James Pinkney and Kort Shankweiler took turns running the offensive's first unit while true freshmen Rob Kass and Brett Clay experienced action with the second and third squads ? Redshirt freshmen Davon Drew and Patrick Pinkney have both been hampered during the early portion of camp with sore shoulders and have not been involved in any passing drills ? Junior Michael MacDonagh, sophomore Mark Robinson, junior Shauntae Hunt and sophomore Brandon Setzer earned snaps on ECU's top defensive line Monday ? Senior linebacker Josh Chilsom (Seffner, Fla.) was extended a roster position by Skip Holtz prior to fall camp ? Chilsom, who sat out the 2004 season in compliance with eligibility issues, has recorded 129 tackles in 24 games during his Pirate career which began 2001 ? As a redshirt freshman in 2002, he totaled 74 stops, which included a rookie-record four sacks ? He followed up with 55 tackles in 2003 while playing in all 12 games (five starts) ? Chilsom netted 11 stops during his college debut vs. Duke Aug. 31, 2002 ... Tuesday's Practice Time: 3:00 p.m. ? 6:00 p.m.; Season Opener: Sept. 3 vs. Duke (1:00 p.m.)
