Wilmington, N.C.--Four East Carolina University women's cross country runners placed among the top 15 to lead the Lady Pirates to a second place finish at the UNCW Seahawk Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. Meanwhile, their male counterparts placed fifth.
Jessica Collins finished in fourth place (18:47.01) in the first event of the season for the Pirates cross country squad. Teammate Caitlin Littlefield crossed the line just three runners later with a time of 19:05.97, putting the ECU team behind only host UNC-Wilmington with most top 10 finishers.
Rounding out the top 15 for East Carolina were Megan Walling (13th, 19:25.51) and Hayley Flynn (15th, 19:30.79). As a team the Lady Pirates finished behind the University of Delaware among the seven teams in competition.
Pacing the ECU men's competitors was Kristian Jorgensen (19:36.57) who was the lone Pirate runner to finish in the top 10 of the competition. Chris Belfiore (11th, 19:41.07) and Jarrett Newby (16th, 19:56.25) rounded out the top-20 for East Carolina, which finished in fifth place as a team.
ECU's next scheduled meet is the North Carolina Invitational, set to be held in Chapel Hill, N.C. on September 17.
