GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Three games against 2005 post-season participants, two postseason NIT Tournament teams, a match up with an eleventh seed from the 2005 NCAA Tournament and a trifecta of holiday tournaments highlight the 2005-06 East Carolina University women's basketball schedule, released Monday by head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener.
The Pirates begin their fourth season under the guidance of Baldwin-Tener on Saturday, Nov. 19 when they travel to the A.J. Palumbo Center on the campus of Duquesne University. The Lady Pirates will participate in their first holiday tournament, taking part in the UNC Greensboro Tournament (Nov. 25-26) before closing out the first month of the season at North Carolina A&T.
After opening the first month on the road, the team returns to ECU's Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum, hosting the annual Lady Pirate Invitational, Dec. 3-4. East Carolina will play host to Southern University in the opening game, with a 3 p.m. start time scheduled. In the opening game of the tournament, Drexel squares off against Idaho, at 1 p.m., with a consolation and championship game scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 4.
The Lady Pirates remain at home when they host Virginia Commonwealth on Dec. 7 and James Madison on Dec. 18. Sandwiched in the middle is a trip to Huntington, W. Va. for the first Conference USA meeting of the year against Marshall (Dec. 16). ECU returns to the road for the final holiday tournament of the season when they travel to Georgia State University for the Hyatt Regency Atlanta Invitational for a two-day tournament, where ECU will take on Davidson in first-round action.
"We are very excited about our schedule," said Baldwin-Tener. " With our young team, we will have many challenges early that should help prepare us for our tough Conference USA schedule."
East Carolina will face its final non-conference opponent when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to face the Crimson Tide. From there, the Lady Pirates will continue the five-game road trip with games against UAB (Jan. 6) and Memphis (Jan. 8), before returning home for a January 13 against Houston. The Pirates return to the road for conference games against Southern Miss (Jan. 20) and UCF (Jan. 22), before facing the first of back-to-back 2005 postseason participants, SMU (Jan. 27) and Tulsa (Jan. 29), who each appeared in the NIT Tournament.
The month of February will see five C-USA home games for the Pirates, beginning with Marshall on Feb. 4. On Feb. 6 ECU will travel to Houston, Texas when they face 2005 NCAA Tournament participant Rice. Four of East Carolina's final six games of the season will be at Williams Arena with match-ups against Memphis (Feb. 10), UAB (Feb. 12), Southern Miss (Feb. 24), and UCF (Feb. 26). In the middle of the four-game home stand the Lady Pirates will travel to UTEP (Feb. 17) and Tulane (Feb. 19).
This season's Conference USA Women's Basketball Tournament will be March 2-5 at Moody Coliseum, on the campus of the SMU Mustangs in Dallas, Texas.
