WILMINGTON, N.C. - The East Carolina men's soccer team dropped its fifth game of the season Friday night as they fell to in-state rival UNC Wilmington 4-1 at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Pirates (0-5) surrendered an early goal to the Seahawks (4-1) when Tim Masters netted the games first goal just 1:27 into the match.
ECU freshman Zach Mathews scored the equalizer at 42:55 when he fired three shots from close range at UNCW goalie Brad Knighton with the third try getting past Knighton into the net.
With the score knotted at 1-all at halftime, Sam Leger struck early in the second period, taking a corner kick from Dustin Efird less than three minutes into the period and notching his fourth goal of the season with a header from close range. The senior forward from Arvada, Colo., then pushed the score to 3-1 with another header, this one at 62:12, after taking a cross from Adam Currey.
Reserve Juho Karjalainen completed the scoring at 70:23 when the junior midfielder converted a penalty kick when Currey was taken down in the box on a breakaway.
"We played extremely well in the first half," said Interim Head Coach Chad Halverson. "In the second half we had a little let down early and could never recover, but our intensity was there and we just need to find a way to play consistent for 90 minutes."
The Pirates will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 21 when they travel Farmville, Va. to face Longwood.
