GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's soccer team dropped its season opener Thursday night against instate foe Gardner-Webb, 6-2, in the first round of the Jacko Classic Soccer Tournament in Boiling Springs, N.C.
Carlton Hughes ripped a shot past ECU keeper Chris Hicks (Wendell, N.C.) at the 11:42 mark to get things started for the 'Dogs, taking a nice feed from Ramirez for a 1-0 lead. Snodgrass put the Bulldogs on top 2-0 early in the 28th minute, as Shane Flippen found the freshman open near the net for the assist.
East Carolina (0-1) answered with a goal from Calvin Simon (Wilmington, N.C.) at the 29:57 mark to trim Gardner-Webb's lead to 2-1, and neither team would score again before intermission. The Pirates wasted little time tying the match in the second period, as Mike Crowley (Chadds Ford, Pa.) weaved through traffic to beat GWU keeper Tyler Kettering at the 55:24 mark to pull even at 2-2.
Snodgrass answered quickly, scoring off a deflection that resulted from Gampi Lapeschi's rocket off the glove of ECU's Hicks at the 56:06 mark for the game winner and a 3-2 lead for the Bulldogs.
Lapeschi overpowered the Pirate defense again less than a minute later, putting Gardner-Webb on top 4-2 with a hard shot into the back of the net at the 56:58 mark and kept pressure on the ECU defenders - finishing with four shots on the night.
The Bulldogs would add two more goals to take a 6-2 victory on the night.
ECU will return to action Saturday, Sept. 3 when they face Winthrop, who dropped their first round match to Appalachian State, 2-1.
