ELON, N.C. - The East Carolina men's soccer team couldn't get anything going on the offensive side of the field Wednesday afternoon as they fell to instate foe Elon 3-0 at Rudd Field.
The Phoenix (3-0-0) opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when Kiki Willis headed a cross from Tim Sullivan past outstretched Pirate keeper Chris Hicks (Wendell, N.C.).
Less than one minute later Willis drew a foul in the box and Elon was awarded a penalty kick which was taken by Brett Paschall. Paschall's shot found the left side of the goal to put the Phoenix up 2-0 at 32:03.
Eric Sass netted his first marker of the season and the third of the game for the Phoenix in the 40th minute when he controlled a loose ball in the box and booted into the back of the net for the final score of the contest.
Hicks grabbed five saves in his 90:00 of work for the Pirates (0-3-0) while Taylor Saxe collected two saves over the course of the afternoon. Elon outshot ECU 11-10 overall and 8-2 on goal. Both of ECU's shots on goal were taken by sophomore Danny Lundquist (Winston-Salem, N.C.).
The Phoenix held a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks.
"I thought that we played well tonight except for that nine minute stretch when they scored," said Interim Head Coach Chad Halverson. "We need to stay focused and get back to work and try to right the ship."
The Pirates will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 11 when they host Georgia Southern at Bunting Field in their first home match of the season at 1 p.m.
