
East Carolina Wins Third Consecutive Game 59-53 Over UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala-- The East Carolina women's basketball team improved to 3-1 on their current road trip following a 59-53 victory over Conference USA foe UAB. The victory moves ECU to 9-4 overall and 1-1 in C-USA action.
Freshman point guard Jasmine Young carried the load, scoring 20 points while dishing out four assists and grabbing seven rebounds. Young, 4-of-7 from the charity stripe, was responsible for 14 of East Carolina's final 18 points.
Trailing 38-33 through the first 6:21 of the second half, ECU turned up its defensive pressure and began connected on two three pointers over the next five minutes of action to knot the game by the 8:20 mark. With the score at 44-44, and Young hitting a critical three pointer for the tie, the freshman point guard took over scoring for ECU down the stretch.
Along with Young, center Cherie Mills scored 12 points while grabbing nine boards, falling just shy of her sixth double-double. Impris Manning paced a Lady Pirate defense which stifled the Blazers (7-5, 0-1) who scored 23 second-half points on 11-of-18 shooting.
In a first half in which East Carolina was handcuffed with 16 team fouls, including Jessica Honesty and Nicole Days with three each, the Lady Pirates trailed on 30-28 after the first half of play.
Defense carried the Lady Pirates over the final 8:39 of the first half after a Britney Jones extended the UAB advantage to 16-11. ECU limited the Blazers scoring potential to free throws, over the next six minutes as the Lady Pirates to trim a deficit of six points to eventually knot the game at 24-24 by the 2:10 mark. A back-and-forth game in the waning minutes, including four points by Jasmine Young and points in the paint by LaCoya Terry and Catherine Coley closed out the half for ECU.
