
Volleyball Outlasts Southern Miss, Extends Winning Streak to Three

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The East Carolina volleyball team won its third match defeating Southern Miss in five games,3-2 (30-28, 30-22, 27-30, 28-30, 15-7) Friday night. The win by the Pirates snaps a Southern Miss four match winning streak. With the win, ECU improves to 13-9, 4-4 in C-USA while Southern Miss drops to 11-10, 4-3 in C-USA.
Four Pirates tallied double-digit kills in the win, with Kelley Wernert recording 22 to lead the team. She added 12 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. Mignon Dubenion registered 21 kills, four digs and four blocks while Jaime Bevan had 16 kills. Melissa Zentner recorded her second straight double-digit kills match, with 12 tonight. Trish Monroe had 14 digs on the night while Stephanie Turner added 12. Setter Heidi Krug tallied 71 assists on the win.
The Pirates hit .311 on the night, recording 81 kills and 71 digs, with 11 total team blocks.
Southern Miss had four players with double-digit kills. Angela Hlavaty led the Golden Eagles with 20 kills while Amanda Blunck recorded 13 kills and 21 digs for the double-double. Setter Cassie Lavery had 40 assists while Megan Gable tallied 21.
The Pirates return to action on Sunday, Oct. 15 as the team travels to Orlando, Fla. for a 1 p.m. match against UCF.
