
Volleyball Makes it Eight in a Row, Sweeps UCF

GREENVILLE, N.C.-- The East Carolina volleyball team won its eighth straight match, sweeping UCF 3-0 (30-25, 30-12, 30-21) Sunday afternoon in Minges Coliseum in the Pirates final home match of 2006. The Pirates are now 18-9, 9-4 in C-USA with just three regular season matches remaining on the schedule. UCF drops to 5-17, 1-11 in C-USA action. With the win, the Pirates set a new school record for consecutive matches won.
Kelley Wernert paced the Pirates with 14 kills and four digs. Jaime Bevan and Stephanie Turner led ECU defensively with seven digs each. Bevan added five kills and five blocks on the day. Mignon Dubenion was one kills shy of double figures, finishing the day with nine, and adding five blocks. Heidi Krug dished out 32 assists, three service aces and four blocks.
Stephanie Serna led the Golden Knights with nine kills, two aces and two blocks. Schanell Neiderworder led UCF defensively with six digs, adding four kills.
ECU out hit the Golden Knights .282-.054, recording 45 kills to the Golden Eagles' 31. East Carolina tallied 11 total blocks in the match.
The Pirates will finish the 2006 regular season on the road, as ECU plays its final three matches away from Minges Coliseum. ECU travels to Birmingham, Ala. for a 7 p.m. match against UAB on Friday, Nov. 3. From there, the Pirates will play at Memphis on Sunday, Nov. 5 and will close out the regular season at Marshall on Saturday, Nov. 11.
