
Gold Team Takes Intra-Squad World Series Title

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Last week the East Carolina baseball team concluded its 2006 Fall Schedule, which was highlighted by the Annual Purple-Gold World Series, inside Lewis Field Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The Pirates, who began their 13-day fall practice schedule on Sept. 11, playing a best of three-game series with assistant coach Link Jarrett coaching the Purple squad and assistant coach Ben Sanderson coaching the Gold.
Senior lefthander Jeff Ostrander guided the Purple to an opening series win Friday night, 9-7. Right fielder Jamie Ray (3-for-5) and third baseman Jake Dean (1-for-4) each belted home runs helping the Purple collect 11 hits. Ray nearly missed hitting for the cycle, lacking only a triple.
On the mound for the Gold was junior Shane Mathews, who picked up the loss. Highlighting the hitting was senior first baseman Ryan Tousley who went 3-for-5, which including three singles. Transfer catcher David Forbes (2-for-4) belted a home run to left field and Trent Ashcraft was 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot.
Game One

In game two, the Gold tied the series at one game a piece with an 11-9 victory in the pouring rain. Senior Mike Flye picked up the win, while Josh Ruhlman, a transfer from Central Michigan, got the loss. In the bottom of the eighth, Dean (2-for-4) connected on his second home run of the series, a grand slam, to pull the Purple even at 9-9. In the top half of the ninth, freshman Devin Harris (2-for-5) drove in the winning run for the Gold with a double to secure the win, 11-9.
Game Two
WP - Mike Flye (1-0); LP - Josh Ruhlman (0-1)
Leading hitters: G - Harrison Eldridge 3-6, 2B; Broc Sutton 3-5, HR; Ryan Tousley 2-5, HR, 2B; Devin Harris 2-5, HR, 2B; Bobby Fowler 2-4; P -Jake Dean 2-4, HR; Drew Schieber 2-4; 2B, BB; Kyle Roller 1-4; Brandon Henderson 1-4; Corey Kemp 1-5.
In the rubber match, both teams combined for 20 hits and 15 runs, with the Gold coming away with the series title, 8-7. Tousley singled home a run in his first at-bat and doubled and scored in his next plate appearance, while freshman Bobby Fowler (2-2) reached base each time he trotted to the plate, walking twice and singling twice. Freshman Zach Cooper picked up the win, while fellow classmate Joe O'Malley suffered the loss.
Dean (3-for-5) once again lead the Purple squad collecting a game-high three hits. Ray and Mollenhauer each pounded out a pair of hits as well.

The Pirates will continue with individual workouts throughout the remainder of the fall and reconvene as an entire squad on Jan. 10.
