East Carolina will look to earn its first road victory of the season Saturday when it travels to Greensboro to face the Spartans of UNC Greensboro coached by ECU alum Mike Dement at Fleming Gym.
Saturday's game will be the Pirates' first of six non-conference games against in-state opponents. Other in-state opponents this season include UNC Wilmington, NC State and Wake Forest.
The Pirates will attempt to bounce back from a disappointing overtime loss at Richmond on Tuesday. ECU held a 3-point lead with 10 seconds left in regulation, but Dan Geriot threw in a 3-point shot to send the game in overtime. ECU made just 1-of-7 field goals in the extra session to drop to 1-1 on the season.
Even though it was a difficult defeat, it didn't overshadow the performance of senior Courtney Captain who poured in a career-high 22 points and tied his career-high with seven rebounds. Freshman Gabe Blair is averaging a double-double with 11.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game after recording his first career double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds against Richmond on Tuesday. Fellow newcomer Darrell Jenkins is also averaging double figures with 13.5 ppg.
UNCG, 0-3, opens its home schedule in search of its first win of the season after suffering road losses to Marshall (in overtime), Penn State and Duke. Saturday's game will be the Spartans' fourth game in the past eight days.
Spartan head coach Mike Dement will look to knock off his alma mater for a second straight season after leading UNCG to a 78-70 win over ECU in Greenville last season. Dement is 1-1 all time against ECU after the Pirates defeated his Cornell team during the 1985-86 season.
