
Lady Pirates Fall in TD Banknorth Classic, 57-43

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Amy Rosenkrantz tallied 14 points to lead Vermont to their fifth TD Banknorth Classic Championship as they defeated East Carolina 57-43 in the championship game Saturday evening at Patrick Gym. The Catamounts improve to 2-1 on the year while ECU falls to 1-2.
The Catamounts jumped out to the early 4-2 lead on two baskets by Rosenkrantz. The Lady Pirates tied the game on a Jasmine Young jumper and took their first lead of the game on Cherie Mills' layup with 17:25 remaining in the opening half. A pair of Young free throws increased ECU's lead to four at 8-4. UVM retook the lead on a Rosenkrantz three-pointer, making the score 9-8 with 16:07 to play. Back to back jumpers by Mills and Impris Manning gave ECU the lead once again, 12-9, but the Catamounts stayed with the Lady Pirates, and retaking the lead, 14-12, on a Sy Janousek basket with 13:30 to play in the half. Young's three-pointer on the next possession put ECU back on top. Nicole Days' layup with 11:44 on the clock gave the Lady Pirates a two possession lead, 17-14. ECU extended its lead to 21-18 on a Mills' jumper with 8:32 to play in the half. After a two minute scoring drought from both teams, the Catamounts cut the lead to one, 21-20 on a May Katsopoulous jumper. A Manning layup with 1:13 to play gave the Lady Pirates a 23-20 lead at the break.
Young led the Lady Pirates with seven points at the break while Mills added six points and seven rebounds. Days also added seven boards. Rosenkrantz led the Catamounts with nine points and five rebounds.
The second half was all Vermont, as they went on a 6-2 run to open the half and retake the lead, 26-25, with 16:15 remaining in the game. A pair of Mills' free throws put ECU back on top, 27-28, but the Catamounts answered, going back up, 28-27. LaCoya Terry's free throws at the 15:06 mark gave the Lady Pirates their final lead of the game, 29-28. A Catamount 10-2 run put Vermont up 39-31 with 10:55 remaining, a lead they would not surrender. The Catamounts pulled away late, going on an 8-0 run late in the game, winning the 13th annual TD Banknorth Classic 57-43.
Young and Mills led the Lady Pirates with a game-high 14 points, while Mills added 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, and the 10th of her career. Days also finished the night with double-digit rebounds, pulling down 11. Rosenkrantz led the Catamounts with 14 points, while Sy Janousek tallied 11 points. Andrea Cihal led UVM with 10 rebounds.
The Catamounts out shot the Lady Pirates, shooting 36.8 percent in the game while holding ECU to 25.4 percent. ECU outrebounded Vermont 46-41 and forced 18 turnovers, resulting in 11 points for the Lady Pirates.
Young and Mills were named to the TD Banknorth All-Tournament team for their efforts. Young finished the tournament with 36 points, including seven three pointers while Mills had 23 total points and 19 rebounds. The Lady Pirates return to action this Tuesday, Nov. 21 as they travel to Norfolk, Va. to face CAA foe Old Dominion. Tip-off from the Ted Constant Convocation Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
