RICHMOND, Va. - A season-high 25 points from Jasmine Young was not enough to hold off VCU Friday night, as the Rams held off a late ECU run, winning their fifth straight, 78-73. With the win, the Rams remain unbeaten at 5-0 while East Carolina falls to 1-4, heading into its first home game this weekend.
East Carolina jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, before a D'Andra Moss lay up cut the Lady Pirate lead to two, 6-4 with 16:32 on the clock. ECU increased its lead to four on a Jessica Slack jumper in the paint, but the Rams tied the game at 8-8 on a Miranda Smith layup with 13:57 remaining in the half. The Lady Pirates went on a 9-2 run over the next five minutes, increasing their lead to seven, at 17-10, with ten minutes on the clock. VCU answered, however, going on their own run, taking their first lead of the game on a Krystal Vaughn jumper at the 7:04 mark. Vaughn and the Rams increased its lead to eight, at 29-21, with 4:57 remaining in the half, on back to back Vaughn baskets. A LaCoya Terry jumper ended the VCU run briefly, but Moss connected on two straight baskets, increasing the Rams lead to ten at 33-23 with under three minutes to play in the half. ECU cut the lead to seven on a pair of free throws and a jumper by Young, making the score 38-31 in favor of VCU at the break.

VCU opened the second half much like it ended the first, with Vaughn connecting on a jumper, extending the Rams lead to nine, 40-31. ECU cut the lead to four, 42-38 on a three-pointer by Young and a layup by Cherie Mills with 17:07 to play in regulation. Another Vaughn basket increased VCU's lead to six, but Young cut it back to four on a finger roll layup with 16:20 on the clock. Gabriela Husarova's jumper in the paint at the 14:21 mark cut the VCU lead to two, 44-42, but back to back baskets by the Rams put them back up 50-44 before a Terry layup cut the lead back down to four with 11:50 on the clock. A Young basket at the 7:13 mark cut the VCU lead to one, at 61-60. The Rams extended their lead to five, 65-60, with 5:43 to play. A pair of Vaughn free throws with 36.8 seconds increased VCU's lead to nine, but a Young three point play with 14.7 seconds remaining cut the lead to six. A Terry steal and layup put the Lady Pirates within four with 1.8 seconds to play, but it was not enough, as the Rams held on for the 78-73 win.
Young led all scorers with a season-high 25 points, adding three assists and two steals. Terry chipped in 14 points and five rebounds.
