BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the third match in a row the UAB volleyball team hit better than .300 for the match, which led to the Blazers downing the fourth place team in Conference USA, snapping an eight match winning streak for East Carolina, 3-1 (28-30, 30-20, 30-27, 30-22), Friday night in Bartow Arena. UAB improves to 20-9 (7-6 C-USA) with its sixth-straight win, marking the program's first 20-win season since 1995. ECU drops to 18-10 (9-5 C-USA) with the loss.
Bozic, who posted her 16th double-double of the season, was joined by sophomore outside hitter Aleksandra Vujovic who finished with 15 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Casey Dent continued her outstanding hitting this season by striking .500 with 15 kills to go with eight digs and four blocks.
Junior libero Brianna Galvin was all over the court, making 23 digs, in addition to serving two aces. Sophomore setter Nevena Stefanov recorded a season-best 69 assists in the four-game match, her second highest total of the season trailing just her 75 assists performance against Mercer in five games.
Junior outside hitter Fernanda Domingos finished the match with 14 kills on .310 hitting to contribute to the offensive output.
ECU was led by Kelley Wernert who had 22 kills and nine digs, while Heidi Krug finished with 40 assists and four blocks. Mignon Dubenion and Jamie Bevan also finished in double figures in kills with 11 and 12, respectively.
Game one was tightly contested the whole way with a Dent kill making it 14-all before UAB opened up a three-point lead after a Bozic kill made it 19-16. The Pirates then made their move, winning seven-straight points, capped off by Bevan's third-straight kill. The ECU run was all that was needed to distance itself, as it pulled out the opening game, 30-28, handing the Blazers a game one defeat.
In game two, UAB came blazing back as they won the first seven points of the game and continued to hold on, taking a 10-2 lead following a kill by junior middle blocker Shaniquwa Cooper. Refusing to let ECU back in the game, Vujovic put away another kill to make it 19-14 and a couple points later a Galvin ace made it 20-15. After giving one back, Domingos served four-straight victorious points to put UAB up, 25-15.
Game three remained tight early on until the Blazers made their move when leading 12-10, rallying off seven points in a row, finished off by a Bozic kill, to bring the count to 19-12 in favor of the Blazers. UAB continued to push forward and was able to hold off a late push by ECU to claim the game, 30-27, on another kill by Bozic.
Leading 2-1 in the match, UAB was jump started in game four by the serving of Vujovic who served an ace to open up a 4-0 lead. ECU came back to even the score at 7-7 following a Stephanie Turner kill, however the Blazers resisted to letting the Pirates back in the match and began to pull away, taking a 17-12 lead on a Bozic kill and then added to its lead after an attack error on the Pirates made it 19-12.
East Carolina returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 5 as the team faces Memphis in a 2:00 p.m. tilt.
